Healthy Fear

Until stepping onto this path my life was ruled by fear. Fear ran my life and was the basis of all my decisions. I would never have admitted that, or even identified it as such, but that was the truth. I was in fear of missing out, I was in fear of not getting what I wanted, I was in fear of loosing what I had, I was in fear of not being good enough, I was just in a constant state of fear. In my journey of recovery I’ve managed to lose most of my fear. That has come with living my life in a rigorously honest way and having found my way to self-love love and acceptance. When I’m living in that place, and connecting to a power greater than myself, I am very rarely in fear, but, some types of fear can be healthy.

Healthy fear motivates us, it stops us from procrastinating, or may shorten the length of time we procrastinate, it can help us take the right action, even if there is an easier one that may not be right, it can help us in many ways to do what we need to do when we need to do it. We can use healthy fear to our advantage if it gets us to where we need to be and where we should be.

For me, I have a fear of not being prepared. So I can use my healthy fear around that to make sure I’ve done my homework. Whether that’s in my career or a meeting with the bank or a lawyer, my healthy fear causes me to research, to ask the questions I need to ask, and get the information I need to to feel safe and educated in that area. I have also turned a great fear, a fear that kept me distant from people, or isolated, and turn that into healthy fear by asking the right questions when I meet someone new, whether in business or personally, because I have issues with trust, I know I need to take the initiative to find out about that person or people and once I feel like I know the kind of person or people they are, and what they’re intentions are, I have used my fear in a healthy way, and, once I know the facts, I am safe. Fear for me has always been around feeling safe, so I use my healthy fear today to find that safety, as best I can, in asking questions and doing my homework. And that goes for anything in my life, if I have a fear of something I can choose to turn that fear into healthy fear by taking some action around it and not let paralyze me, or keep me away from people. I have the ability to make change happen and stamp out that fear, or reduce it greatly. I am no long manipulated by it, I address it, tackle it head on and use it to my advantage. Now, that’s not to say sometimes my old foe, fear, doesn’t pop up and stop me in my tracks, it does, but I now can work through that fear, get to the source or root of that fear and begin to work through it, many times that fear is from my past, and not actually a threat in my present life, so it’s recognizing that and getting to work on letting it go.

Fear will always try to keep us in it’s grips, but we have the power to turn our fears around and have it work for us to achieve the goals we want to achieve or to live the life we have imagined for ourselves. It’s all there for the taking, if we choose to take it, and make our fear work for us, letting go of what doesn’t. I recently made the choice to walk through some major fear in my life that was tied to my past, but affecting my life today and my future, and because I set out to let that fear go, because it was no longer valid, something really wonderful is happening in my life because I was able to leave that fear in the past. It’s up to you SLAYER, do you want to be a prisoner to your fear, or leave it behind and go after your dreams? SLAY on!

SLAY OF THE DAY: Do you let fear take over when making decisions or taking action? Does fear stop you from taking action? What has fear gotten in the way of in your past? Do you regret that? What can you do today to let go of that fear? How can you change that fear into healthy fear? What other healthy fears do you have in your life? What can you change into healthy fear? Fear can only rule our lives if we let it, it is up to us to live in our truth, to let go of the past, to investigate and find out the answers we need in order to move on and leave fear behind. You can do it SLAYER, I know you can.

Low-Grade Unmanageability

Before stepping on this path, my life was unmanageable. I mean, I wasn’t even living life, I was just going through the motions. It was obvious to me that things weren’t good, weren’t working, and weren’t looking good, the damage I was doing to myself was evident, and so when I reached out for help I cleaned house of all the things that stood in my way of a healthy and productive life. That was a good start, but what took me some time to realize is that even after I did that, and those big road blocks to my well-being had been taken away, I was still doing damage to myself in smaller, almost undetectable ways.

A lot of us function with a low-grade unmanageability in our life, like a dull hum in the background, one you almost can’t hear, but if you stop and listen it’s there. We may not even know we’re doing it, but, it’s the little things we do to ourselves to cause stress and discomfort in our lives, because we still think that’s what we deserve, that’s where we’re at our best, or chaos is all we’ve ever known, so we silently throw some chaos in our way life confetti to create a chaos party. At this point you may be asking yourself, do I do that? We all do to an extent, and, it can be just as damaging, or possibly more so, than the big glaring ways we may make our lives unmanageable.

Low-grade unmanageablity can be things like, not leaving on time so you’re constantly racing to not be late, not opening your mail, not washing something right away before a stain sinks in, letting your insurance lapse, waiting until the last minute to start your taxes, the list goes on, there are countless ways we sabotage ourselves everyday, and keep ourselves off solid footing and in peace of mind.

In a way it’s one of the cruelest forms of cruelty we commit on ourselves because it’s so subtle, we may not even realize the extent of the damage we’re causing. We may just chalk it up to forgetfulness, or being busy, or, procrastinating, or, we’re just not good at keeping track of the small things, but those small things add up to one big problem, we are damaging ourselves, and preventing ourselves from being our best selves. It is a way to keep harming ourselves, but we disguise it as something else. It can be very deceptive, or we can possibly know exactly what we’re doing and do it anyways. There are so many ways to practice this low-grade unmanageablity in our lives that we may lose sight of how many different ways we’re doing it.

When we are not taking the next right action, or stepping up to a responsibility, or not doing what’s best for us, we are possibly putting ourselves in danger, and it may not be physical, although it can be, but many times it’s just that hum, that annoying hum that keeps us agitated enough that we can’t find our peace, our happy place, but we are the ones who are doing it, and we are the ones who have the power to stop it. Make a commitment today to identify the low-grade unmanageablity in your life, what damage are you doing that you can turn around to give yourself that best chance of a healthy life? What little bumps can you take away that will give you a smoother road to travel? You may be setting yourself up for failure SLAYER, one tiny action at a time.

SLAY OF THE DAY: Can you identify the ways that you might create low-grade unmanageablility in your life? Why do you think you do this? How does it harm you or cause you stress or pain? How can you stop doing those things? Do you want to stop doing those things? If not, why not? SLAYER, there are many things we do not have control over, so why do we put roadblocks up for ourselves to keep us from being our best? Identify the ways you can clean up your side of the street, and keep your road to happiness free of any obstacles you may put in your own way. SLAY on!

Do What’s In Front Of Your Hands

I talked about this last week on SLAY TALK LIVE, in regards to anxiety. I used to suffer from a lot of anxiety, and typically it was because I was living in the past, or I was living in the future. I wasn’t living in the present. When we worry about things that have happened already, or fixate on circumstances or situations that have already happened, we can feel anxious, we feel anxious because there is nothing we can do to change the past, we just keep rehashing what’s already happened, or we let it dictate what will happen because we haven’t take the necessary steps to correct the behavior or situation so we worry about it happening again. There are also times we live in the future. We fear what may or may not happen, we worry about things that again, we have no control over, because just like the past, we cannot control the future either. What we can control is right here and now. So when I would feel anxious it was suggested to me to focus on what’s in front of my hands.

When you focus on what’s in front of your hands you are present. You are looking at what is right in front of you, and that is something you can control, well, most of the time, but when you’re looking at what is right in front of you you are able to take action, it’s also a way to focus when you’re feeling overwhelmed and have a lot to do. Many times we get side-tracked, or we can procrastinate because we don’t know where to start on our long list of things to get done, but, if you focus on what’s in front of your hands, and start there, you can work your way down your list and it doesn’t seem so daunting.

For me, when I first started my journey on this path, focusing on what was in front of my hands was that magic trick that got me through my day, and it taught me how to zero in and focus on an activity even if there was a lot going on around me, or if I had a lot to do, as I practiced being present the rest of my worries or tasks started to fall away and I got the first task done, and I learned to get it done without feeling anxious. One thing that always quashes anxiety is action, when we take action and do what we can in any given situation our worries about the past or future start to fade away because we are doing what we can in the present moment, also, we are occupied with the doing that we lose the worry.

Our hands are always with us, when you feel anxious, when you are worried or overwhelmed, look at your hands and ask yourself, what is in front of my hands, what can I do to take action right now? It’s a simple trick to tackle a substantial problem.

SLAY OF THE DAY: Do you often feel overwhelmed or anxious? What causes you to feel that way? Are these things you have control over? Are these things that are active in your present life? Or, are these things have already happened, or have yet to happen? What can you do to take action in your present life to address these things or issues? Do you often get overwhelmed by your to-do list? What happens when you get overwhelmed? What do you do to overcome it? Do you see that by focusing on what’s in front of your hands that you may be able to focus on the task in front of you rather than letting your thoughts hijack you and paralyze you? I challenge you SLAYER to focus on what’s in front of your hands, that when you feel anxious or worry, right that down, acknowledge it, but go back to what is in front of your hands. Tackle each task one at a time, take action where you can, let your past teach you as you move forward in your present day, and keep your thoughts out of the future, none of that has happened yet, and your energies are better spent on the things that are happening right in front of you. Do what’s in front of your hands. SLAY on!

Maybe Is Enough

Sometimes setting out to start on a new path can seem daunting. The hills you have to climb seem insurmountable, and you can feel defeated long before you even begin. Your mind will tell you you will fail, it will site all the times you’ve let yourself, and others, down, it will tell you you can’t do it, even when you can, but even if all you can muster is maybe I can, that is enough to get you started, to put one foot in front of the other, to take that leap of faith and jump. Maybe is enough. Maybe is the crack of the door being open, maybe is that little bit of light that you need to stay focused, to motivate you to work and maybe give you a place to work to, because if maybe gets you started, maybe can get you to believe that you can.

We all can make excuses for not starting something, we all can procrastinate, we place expectations on ourselves of where we’re supposed to be to get started, or what head-space we’re supposed to have, that we lose sight of the fact that we can just start, any time, any place, we can just choose to start. Nothing has to look any way other than the way it looks. We get to decide when the right time is, we get to decide when we’re ready, what we need to do, the steps we need to take, no one else gets to decide that for us, and when the road gets tough, remember what you’re fighting for, remember why it’s worth it, remember it’s for you. The best time to start may just be right now.

You also don’t have to know all the steps you have you need to get where you want to be, or even have everything in place, all you have to do is start. There have been many times I have started something new not knowing exactly how I was going to get to the finish line, but trusted that if I started that the next piece I needed to reach my goal would come if I just started doing the work, and, it has, every time. It’s about taking action, letting people know what you are trying to accomplish, and being accountable to that goal.  When we do those things, magic happens, something shifts and the missing pieces we need seem to come together and help us reach the finish line. Too many times we think we have to have all the pieces before we start, we don’t, all you need is a desire to do something and a belief you can, and you’ve got all the pieces you need to get started.

Don’t let negative self-talk get in the way of going after your dreams, or goals, or starting something new, dig deep and go after what you want, talk about what you want, and do the work to get what you want. No one can tell you what is right or wrong, except you, we make our own rules and we get to decide what is right and wrong for us. Use your strength, your drive, your stamina to go after the life you want to have SLAYER, and when the path seems dark and a little too steep of a hill to climb, remember that maybe is enough to get started, find your light and never lose sight of it, it will always bring you home.

SLAY OF THE DAY: Do you talk yourself out of things before you’ve even started? Why do you do that? How do you do that? What do you say to yourself? Where does this negative self-talk come from? What do you say to yourself? Would you allow anyone else in your life to speak to yourself like that? So why do you allow yourself? What is a kinder and gentler way to speak to yourself? How can you use words to encourage yourself? When you’ve attempted to start something in past and weren’t able to reach your goal, what stopped you? How can you overcome this for the next time? SLAYER, you have it in to reach your goals, your dreams, that life you want, the time to start is now, even if you don’t know where to begin, begin by taking action, any action, that will get you on the path to victory, trust that when you are doing the footwork the answers will come and you will be shown the next step, the people you will need to help you along the way will come, and what once seemed impossible, in reality, when you just try you may realize that you’ve been enough this whole time. SLAY on!
