You Can’t Change The Past, But You Can Change How It Affects You

There is no going back.

No rewinding. No editing. No alternate ending where we made the perfect choice every time. The past is fixed. It happened. And for a long time, I let mine define me.

Before I began this healing journey, I used my past as proof that I was a victim. I told those stories in ways that supported that narrative. Sometimes I wanted sympathy. Sometimes I wanted validation. Sometimes I wanted an excuse for behavior I knew was not aligned with who I truly wanted to be.

And here is the truth I eventually had to face.

In many of those situations, I had a role. Sometimes a small one. Sometimes a big one. But denying that kept me stuck. It kept me repeating patterns. It kept me living in yesterday instead of building today.

The moment I committed to honesty, especially with myself, everything began to shift.


Owning Your Story Changes Its Power

Taking responsibility is not about blame. It is about freedom.

When I stopped pointing outward and started looking inward, I began to see patterns. Choices I had made. People I had allowed into my life. Boundaries I had not set. Truths I had ignored.

At first, that realization was uncomfortable. I had built an identity around being wronged. Letting go of that identity felt like losing something familiar.

But what I gained was far greater.

Clarity. Growth. Self respect. And the ability to change.

Once you see your patterns, you can interrupt them.

And that is where transformation begins.


The Past Only Has The Power You Give It

I used to carry shame, anger, and frustration everywhere I went. Those emotions colored how I saw myself and others. They influenced my reactions. They shaped my expectations.

But when I started living more honestly, those emotions began to loosen their grip.

I learned to ask different questions:

What did I learn?
What would I do differently now?
What boundaries do I need moving forward?
What forgiveness is necessary for peace?

Sometimes forgiveness was for someone else. Sometimes it was for myself. Often it was both.

And slowly, the past stopped feeling like a prison and started feeling like a teacher.


Patterns Become Signals Instead Of Traps

One of the biggest gifts of reflection is recognition.

When you understand your patterns, familiar situations begin to feel different. You notice warning signs earlier. You pause before reacting. You make decisions with awareness instead of autopilot.

Early on, I often did not know what the “right” response was. So I learned something important.

Pause.

Life is not a game show. There is no prize for responding fastest. Taking time to think, to ask questions, or to seek guidance is not weakness. It is wisdom.

And with practice, better decisions become more natural.

That is growth in action.


Changing Today Rewrites Tomorrow

You cannot rewrite the past, but you absolutely shape what comes next.

When we act with honesty, integrity, and awareness, the weight of past mistakes lightens. They stop defining us because we are no longer repeating them.

We admit when we are wrong. We make amends when possible. We learn. We adjust. We grow.

And suddenly, the past becomes context instead of identity.

That shift is powerful.

It creates space for self respect. Confidence. Peace.


Healing Requires Compassion Too

Responsibility does not mean harsh self judgment.

Some experiences truly were outside our control. Some situations were painful, unfair, or confusing. Acknowledging that is part of healing too.

The key is balance.

Accountability where we had choice. Compassion where we did not.

Both are necessary for emotional freedom.

And both allow us to move forward without dragging the past behind us.


You Are Allowed To Outgrow Who You Were

This might be the most important part.

You are not required to remain the person you were during your hardest seasons.

Growth means evolution. Awareness means change. Healing means forward movement.

Your past informs you.

It does not imprison you.

And every day offers a chance to choose differently.

Be The Mountain, Not The Weather

I was talking to someone the other day. They were struggling with something, and before he finished sharing, he said, “I know, I need to be the mountain and not the weather.”
It made me smile.

Yes, we should all be the mountain.


Solid vs. Shifting

The mountain is solid. It has a strong foundation. Nothing is moving a mountain—it stands tall.

The weather, on the other hand, comes and goes. It shifts and swirls. It can change completely in a day, be unreliable, unstable, surprising, and even destructive. Sure, there might be days when having the force of the weather sounds tempting—when it feels like release—but in the long run, what we need is to be the mountain.

So, how do we become more like the mountain and less like the weather?


Be Flexible

It might sound strange to say a mountain should be flexible, but building your own solid foundation means being open and adaptable.

I’ve written before about the importance of staying teachable. To remain teachable, we have to stay flexible—open to new ideas, perspectives, and information. It’s great to have convictions, but it’s also essential to listen to other viewpoints. You never know when you might learn something that shifts your understanding or reaffirms your stance.

Stay flexible. Look at situations from all angles. Make sure your perspective rests on solid ground.


Give Yourself Permission

Be confident in your decisions. Allow yourself to try new things—without waiting for approval.

Too often, we look to others for validation when we should be checking in with ourselves. If it makes you happy, inspires you, or fills you with joy, do it. It doesn’t matter if others understand or approve. This is your life.

Give yourself permission to change. To grow. To become.


Find Forgiveness

Let go of what no longer serves you. Release the grudges, the regrets, the “should-haves” that weigh you down.

Forgive others for what they did—or couldn’t do. More importantly, forgive yourself. For not knowing better. For not making the best choice in a moment. We’re all human, and none of us gets it right all the time.

Holding on to past hurts chains us to the past. Letting go frees us to move forward.


Be Mindful

With forgiveness comes mindfulness.

When we practice mindfulness, we make choices that serve us—decisions that help us grow, strengthen our self-esteem, and build true confidence.

Stay present. Stay grounded.


Find Love and Gratitude

When we move through each day with love in our hearts and gratitude for what we have, we make better decisions.

Walking in love and gratitude keeps us centered in spirit, not ego. And it’s from this space that we find true peace—a peace that can’t be shaken by life’s storms.


Engage in Life

This is the result of it all.

When we practice these principles, we become more engaged in life. We care for ourselves and nurture relationships with others. Our world expands as we open ourselves to new experiences and connections.

We become the mountain—steady, solid, unwavering—no matter what storms may come. And we know the sun will always rise again.

What Is Your Anger Telling You?

We’ve all felt it—that boiling surge of frustration, the kind that hits you like a tidal wave and demands to be noticed. But here’s a question we don’t ask often enough: What is your anger really trying to tell you?

It’s easy to blame the person or situation in front of us, but most of the time, the fury isn’t actually about the moment at hand. It’s about something deeper. A past hurt. A lingering wound. A time you weren’t heard, respected, protected. So before you explode, pause. Ask yourself: Where is this really coming from?


The Root Beneath the Rage

For many of us, anger is an old friend. It comes from childhood trauma, from being dismissed, silenced, bullied, or made to feel small. When those memories go unprocessed, they fester. And when something in the present taps on that old bruise?

We react.

And we react big.

I used to live in that space. I didn’t always know why I was so angry, but it was always simmering, ready to spill. I lashed out. I snapped. And more often than not, I had to circle back with an apology to someone who got hit with the shrapnel of my unresolved pain.

But here’s the thing: that anger was valuable. It wasn’t just chaos—it was a clue. A road map pointing me to the places inside that still needed healing.


So What Do You Do With It?

If you’re like me, you may need some help unpacking your anger. And that’s okay. Anger is loud. It covers things up. But underneath it?

There’s usually sadness. Hurt. Shame. Fear.

When you get curious instead of combative, you give yourself the power to shift from reactive to responsive.

Here are five practices that help me navigate my anger today:

  1. Pause. Don’t fire back. Stop and ask, What’s really going on here? Is this familiar? Is this even about now? You don’t get bonus points for quick comebacks. Take the time you need.
  2. Breathe. Deep breaths help regulate your nervous system and quiet the noise in your brain. One breath. Then another. You are safe.
  3. Seek solutions. If you can calm down enough, shift your focus to finding a way forward. It’s okay to say, “I’m upset, but I want to figure this out.” That’s powerful.
  4. Use “I” statements. Avoid blame. Lead with your experience. “I feel overwhelmed when…” lands better than “You never…”
  5. Release the grudge. Let go of the need to be right. If you’ve expressed yourself and nothing changes, honor your truth and move on. Not everything deserves a permanent place in your energy.

You Deserve Peace

Here’s what I know now: we are not built to live in a state of constant rage. That’s not power, that’s pain. And it will eat you from the inside if you don’t find a healthier way to understand it.

Be the detective. Find your triggers. Get curious about your reactions. Let your anger lead you to the parts of yourself that still need attention—then offer those parts compassion.

When you do the work, when you learn to listen, anger becomes less of a wrecking ball and more of a compass.

And that, my friend, is how you slay.

If You Don’t Bend, You’ll Break

I used to think being stubborn made me strong.
I wore my “wood-head” nickname like a badge of honor, proud that no one could get me to change my mind once it was made up. I believed my rigidity protected me.
But what it really did was keep me stuck.
I was unyielding, closed off, and resistant to change. And eventually, I broke.
I hit the floor, empty and out of options. My stubbornness wasn’t strength—it was a wall between me and growth, between me and peace.


Turning Stubbornness into Strength

When I finally made the choice to walk a better path, I realized I could channel that same stubbornness into something good.
I learned to use it to push through the tough days, to hold myself accountable, and to keep moving forward even when old behaviors tried to pull me back.
Instead of fighting against myself, I started fighting for myself.


The Power of Flexibility

Life is always changing, tossing curveballs our way. If we cling to what’s familiar, we stay stuck. But when we’re willing to bend, to try a new direction, we create space for something better.
Flexibility doesn’t mean giving up your values—it means recognizing when it’s worth letting go, shifting perspective, or simply approaching something with a fresh mind.
It’s about learning to move with grace and openness, discovering that the “new way” might just be the better way.


Breaking Free from the Safe Zone

Being stubborn felt safe. It gave me a sense of control. But it also kept me from experiencing new opportunities, relationships, and growth.
Have you ever pretended to “try” something new, just to prove it wouldn’t work? I did that too. But I’ve learned that true trying means approaching with a positive, open heart, willing to embrace whatever outcome arises.

We’ve all been there.

That moment when you feel completely justified.
You warned them. You told them what would happen. And now—here you are, furious, ready to let loose with every ounce of frustration you’ve stored up.

You’re 100% right…
And still, something feels 100% wrong.

It might feel powerful in the moment—but often, it leaves you feeling more hollow than healed.

Our Reactions Are Our Responsibility

  • How far you let them in

There will always be people we have to interact with—coworkers, family members, even acquaintances we didn’t choose. But even in those cases, we are still the ones who determine how much access they have to our energy.

When We Engage to Feel Superior

Sometimes we step into situations knowing they won’t end well.

Why?
Because deep down, we’re looking for a reason to get angry.
To say “I told you so.”
To feel superior, righteous—even if it’s just for a moment.

Anger, in this form, is seductive.
It gives us a temporary hit of control, of power.
But it fades.
And once it does, we’re left with the truth: we used that anger to fill something inside us.
A need. A hurt. A void.

And it didn’t work.


Lashing Out Isn’t Leadership

When you feel like lashing out, when you feel morally superior, when you want to “teach someone a lesson”—pause.

Ask yourself:

  • Could I have avoided this situation?

  • Did I knowingly enter this dynamic?

  • Am I trying to justify my anger by proving someone wrong?

A lot of self-righteous anger comes from the need to control.
But here’s the hard truth: we can’t control anyone else.
We only control ourselves.

Trying to control others will always lead to the same outcome:

  • Disappointment

  • Resentment

  • Frustration

  • Anger

That’s not power.
That’s a cycle.


Break the Cycle with Compassion

The way out is through awareness, compassion, and boundaries.

We avoid self-righteous anger by:

  • Engaging with people who align with us

  • Setting boundaries with those who don’t

  • Letting go of the illusion that anger makes us strong

  • Staying open, flexible, and willing to grow

  • Being clear with others—and honest with ourselves

And most importantly: not exploding when someone behaves exactly as they always have.

Wishful thinking won’t change a pattern.
Anger won’t either.
But self-awareness will.


Anger Is a Signal, Not a Strategy

Righteous anger might feel satisfying in the moment.
But if the goal is to belittle someone, to control them, or to make yourself feel bigger—it’s not righteous. It’s a reaction.

And reactions are usually about us, not them.

As SLAYERS, we take responsibility for that.
We engage with kindness.
We communicate with clarity.
We protect our energy by refusing to get pulled into battles we don’t need to fight.

So if you’re angry—own it.
Sit with it.
Figure out where it’s coming from.

Then SLAY that dragon—and walk forward in peace.

Contrary Action

When I first began this path, I had to rewire the way I thought—completely.

My mind defaulted to negativity. It convinced me people were against me. It whispered that I’d never make it, that I didn’t belong, that failure was inevitable. And because I believed it, I acted on it. That belief nearly cost me everything.

So when I committed to healing—to getting better, to learning how to love myself and live differently—I had to learn something new: contrary action.

What Is Contrary Action?

Quite simply, contrary action means doing the opposite of what you would normally do—especially if what you’ve always done hasn’t brought you peace, joy, or healing.

It’s breaking patterns.
It’s pausing before reacting.
It’s asking: What’s the loving, honest response here?

That pause is the magic.

At State of Slay™, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again—life is not a game show.
There is no prize for the fastest answer.
And most of the time, our fastest answer is coming from an old wound or old wiring.


A Different Way to Respond

In the beginning, I had to practice contrary action nearly every time I opened my mouth—or even thought about opening my mouth.
It didn’t come naturally. In fact, it felt strange.
Awkward. Uncomfortable. Like backing down.

But here’s what I learned:

  • I wasn’t backing down—I was growing up.
  • I wasn’t avoiding conflict—I was choosing peace.
  • I wasn’t shrinking—I was showing up for myself in a new, more aligned way.

Old me might’ve lied to get what I wanted, manipulated to stay in control, or started a fight just to feel something.
New me? Learned to take a breath. To tell the truth. To walk away if needed.
That shift changed everything.


Building a New Foundation

Practicing contrary action gave me something I hadn’t had in a long time: self-esteem.

Every time I did the right thing—even when it felt weird or hard—it built a new brick in the foundation I now stand on.
And once I started building that self-esteem, I didn’t want to do things that tore it down.

Was it always easy? No.
Did I mess up sometimes? Absolutely.
But the more I practiced contrary action, the more I started to trust myself—and life began to open up in ways I couldn’t have imagined.


10 Ways to Practice Contrary Action

Here are a few simple ways you can try it today:

  1. Give someone a compliment when you’re feeling jealous or insecure.
  2. Own your part instead of seeking revenge.
  3. Take a walk instead of reaching for something to numb the feeling.
  4. Breathe deeply instead of lashing out.
  5. Visualize the life you want instead of reliving your worst decisions.
  6. Remember a win when fear tells you to quit.
  7. Take time for yourself instead of saying there’s never enough time.
  8. Say no with love instead of saying yes out of guilt.
  9. Go to bed instead of scrolling endlessly.
  10. Speak about dreams instead of gossip.

Each time you choose contrary action, you’re choosing yourself.
You’re choosing growth.
You’re choosing a future that looks nothing like your past.

The Power of Being Open

Willingness isn’t a commitment—it’s a crack in the door. A whisper of possibility. A softening where there once was resistance.

When I first stepped onto the path of recovery, I wasn’t ready to overhaul my life. I didn’t have all the answers. But I was willing. It wasn’t easy. In fact, it almost didn’t happen. I had reached a point so low, I could barely imagine a way forward. But in that moment, the tiniest willingness cracked through the darkness—and everything changed from there.


What Willingness Actually Looks Like

We often think willingness means taking big leaps. But really, it’s more like:

  • Saying, “Maybe I don’t have all the answers.”
  • Being open to new tools, even if they feel unfamiliar.
  • Letting someone help you—really help you.
  • Admitting something isn’t working the way you hoped.

Willingness makes life bigger. It breaks us out of the echo chambers in our heads and says, “What if there’s more?”


The Shift That Changes Everything

Willingness is not about setting an entire plan in motion. It’s about being open to the idea that something might be possible.

That maybe you don’t have to keep living under the weight of what’s not working. That maybe your life could feel lighter. That maybe there’s help—and healing—available to you.

When you’re willing, you become a magnet for the right people, places, and opportunities. You notice support instead of deflecting it. You welcome answers instead of defending limitations. You shift from surviving to slowly, gently, learning to thrive.


I Still Choose Willingness Every Day

Even now, years into this journey, willingness remains one of my most powerful tools. Every time I fall, every time I face something unfamiliar, I remind myself: I just have to be willing. Not perfect. Not fearless. Just willing.

Because willingness invites the Universe to show up. It creates space for grace. And that space? It’s often where the biggest breakthroughs begin.

So wherever you are today, ask yourself: Am I willing?

You don’t have to say yes to everything. You don’t have to commit to a massive shift. But if you can find even a flicker of willingness, that might just be enough to change everything.
