Love on a Leash

There’s a kind of love that doesn’t feel like love at all. It looks the part—smiles, sweet words, even grand gestures—but underneath, it’s tethered to expectations, rules, and unspoken conditions. It’s love, but only if. That’s love on a leash.

Love on a leash says: “I’ll love you if you behave a certain way.” Or worse, “I’ll love you when you’re less of this and more of that.” Sometimes, the leash comes from others. But just as often? We hold the leash ourselves.

We believe we must be a specific version of ourselves to be lovable. We shrink. We twist. We contort our identities to avoid rejection, or worse—abandonment. We believe we’re only worthy of love if we’re easy to handle, always agreeable, or constantly achieving.

And over time? That leash tightens. We stop reaching. We stop expressing. We stop showing up as who we really are.


I Know That Leash All Too Well

I’ve felt it—the pull of wanting to be loved so badly that I’d trade my truth for someone else’s comfort. The tension of walking on eggshells just to keep the peace. The guilt that rises when I try to set a boundary, even a healthy one, because I fear I’ll lose the connection if I do.

But here’s what I’ve learned:

Any love that demands you abandon yourself isn’t love. It’s control.

Love shouldn’t feel like a leash. It should feel like a safe place to land.


Real Love Doesn’t Require a Performance

Authentic love sees the real you. It invites all your parts—your fire and your softness, your growth and your mess. It doesn’t flinch at your vulnerability. It honors it.

And the same goes for how we love ourselves.

When we hold ourselves to impossible standards, we put our own hearts on a leash. We tell ourselves we’ll be worthy when we’re thinner, calmer, more successful, more perfect.

But we’re worthy now. We’ve always been.

You don’t have to earn love by becoming someone else. You get to be loved for who you are.


Releasing the Leash

Letting go of love with conditions means facing our fears. It means risking disapproval. It means standing in our truth, even if someone walks away.

But it also means freedom.

It means deeper connection, greater peace, and the kind of joy that only comes from being fully known and still fully accepted.

It starts with you. How you love yourself. How you speak to yourself. What you tolerate—from others and from your own inner voice.

And maybe most importantly? It starts with the unlearning of what love was never supposed to be.

Today I Will Not Stress Over Things I Cannot Control

Easier said than done, right?
Especially now.
It feels like everything—from the world at large to our daily lives—is spiraling beyond our control.

And it’s true: most of life really is outside of our hands.
No matter how hard we try to will something into existence or change an outcome, some things just are.
But here’s the truth I’ve come to live by:
I may not be able to control what happens around me—but I can control how I respond to it.
And that’s where the power is.


The Illusion of Control

When I was living in the dark, I was consumed by control.
Trying to manage everything and everyone.
Manipulating, bargaining, obsessing—believing that if I could just control the situation, I could finally feel safe.

But no matter how hard I tried, life had other plans.
It didn’t care how hard I worked to bend it to my will.
And I exhausted myself trying.

The more I tried to control, the more unmanageable everything became.
It didn’t just wear me out—it wore me down.
My mental health suffered.
My self-worth took a hit.
And I lost myself in the process.


Letting Go Was the Turning Point

When I finally made the decision to change my life, I was told something that made me flinch:
You have to accept that you can’t control everything.”

That one sentence lit up every fear I had.
I didn’t want to hear it.
But I needed to.

Because as terrifying as letting go felt, holding on was doing more damage.

So I started small.
I worked on myself.
I practiced gratitude.
I focused on the good.
And I gave back where I could.

Slowly, the need to control started to loosen its grip.
And I began to feel something I hadn’t felt in a long time: peace.


The Freedom in Acceptance

Letting go doesn’t mean giving up.
It means accepting reality as it is—and choosing to move forward anyway.
It means doing what you can, where you are, with what you have.

It means focusing on your choices, your behavior, your energy—not the chaos around you.

And when you feel that old need for control creeping in?
Put the focus back on yourself.

What I Can Do Today

There are still plenty of things I can’t control—and many of them deeply disturb me.
But I’ve learned that obsessing over what I can’t change doesn’t help.

What does help?
Doing what I can.

I show up for myself.
I show up for others.
I make better choices.
And I leave the rest.

Because acceptance isn’t giving up—it’s breaking free.

Your Mind Replays What Your Heart Cannot Delete

We’ve all been there—tossing and turning, unable to fall asleep, replaying a conversation or event from the past. Wishing we had responded differently. Wondering why it still hurts. Telling ourselves to let it go—but we can’t.

Our mind replays what our heart hasn’t yet released.

It’s like our brain is trying to rewrite the story to heal us, but instead, the loop only deepens the ache. Until we learn to extract the lesson, offer ourselves grace, and let go of what we can’t change, we keep ourselves stuck in the pain of yesterday.


Before the Release: The Cycle of Replay

Before walking this path, I never let anything go.

I was a walking vessel of resentment. Conversations looped in my head for days, weeks—sometimes years. I’d even replay them out loud, alone in my room, beating myself up for not saying the “right” thing or for freezing in the moment.

The weight of those replays followed me into new relationships and opportunities like a ball and chain. Every fresh connection felt like a repeat of the old one. I filtered every interaction through the pain and fear I hadn’t dealt with. Eventually, I started to isolate—bitterly and often.

And yes, my heart hurt. A lot. But what I didn’t realize was that I was choosing to stay in that hurt every time I pressed play again.


Rewriting the Loop

It wasn’t until I began prioritizing my peace—my healing—that I realized how much control I had.

Letting go didn’t mean letting someone else off the hook. It meant letting me off the hook. No longer dragging around conversations that had already ended or wounds that no longer served me.

I began to ask: What can I take from this? What’s mine to own? And what do I need to release?

Sometimes, yes, the harm done wasn’t my fault. But the replay? That was on me.

By valuing my peace over my pain, I slowly turned the volume down on the noise—and finally found some quiet.


You Can Mute the Past

We may not be able to delete every painful moment from our hearts—but we can learn to mute the noise. To press stop on the loop. To extract the wisdom and throw out the rest.

Because the longer we replay what hurt us, the longer we stay hurt.

Let it teach you. Then let it go.

When We’re In Fear, We’re Not Present

Fear has a way of creeping in quietly—and taking over quickly. It pulls us out of the present moment and plants us firmly in the past or the future, playing out worst-case scenarios or old wounds on repeat. But the truth is, when we’re in fear, we’re not really here.


What Fear Steals From Us

I had a conversation recently with a friend who found herself back in a familiar situation—and right back in fear. The feelings were intense: paralyzing anxiety, overwhelming self-doubt, and a fear of losing what she wanted or not getting what she needed. We talked about what fear does—how it derails relationships, distorts truth, and keeps us stuck in unhealthy patterns.

And most of all, how it removes us from the now.

I know this pattern well. Before walking this path, fear ran the show. Most of my decisions—if not all—were made out of fear. Fear of failure. Fear of success. Fear of being seen. Fear of being invisible. I either braced for impact or ran from it.

But fear can’t survive in the present. That’s something I’ve learned in recovery. When I’m rooted in what’s real—what’s right in front of me—fear starts to lose its grip. I may still feel nervous or uncertain, but I’m no longer frozen. I can take action. I can stay grounded. I can breathe.


What Staying Present Makes Possible

When I stay in the moment, I stay in the facts. I don’t get lost in what-ifs. I focus on the next right step.

That’s not to say I don’t feel fear anymore—I do. But I don’t let it drive the car. I know now that fear often tells lies. It tries to convince me that I don’t have options. That I’m still that scared version of myself who had no choice but to repeat the same mistakes. But I’m not. I’ve walked through fire and come out stronger. And each time I’ve stepped into fear, I’ve stepped through it.

Sometimes fear pops up when I try something new. Sometimes it whispers when I begin to grow. But when I remember how many times I’ve faced fear and survived—when I recall the freedom that follows courage—it helps me stay centered.

You don’t have to let fear run your life. You can acknowledge it, feel it, and still take the next step. That’s what growth is.


Don’t Let Fear Take the Wheel

We all experience fear. Some of it is healthy—like instinctive caution that keeps us safe. But the fear that stops us from showing up fully? That keeps us from chasing dreams or forming meaningful relationships? That’s the fear worth challenging.

Stay grounded. Stay curious. Stay present.

Because the only place you can make real change—the only place you can grow—is right here, right now.

Find Your OK Without Giving Away Your Power

We all want people, places, and things to go our way.
We imagine how life should look, how others should act—and when things don’t line up with that vision, we get unsettled.
Sometimes we unravel.

But here’s the truth:
If you need someone else to act a certain way so you can be OK… you’ve given away your power.

We cannot control the world around us.
We can only control how we show up in it.


Control, Acceptance, and That False Sense of Safety

Back when I was living in the dark—emotionally, mentally, spiritually—my life felt completely unmanageable. I was spiraling, yet I still expected everything around me to bend in my favor. If things didn’t go how I wanted, I panicked. If people didn’t say or do what I thought they should, I spun out.

So I tried to control what I couldn’t:
People.
Places.
Situations.
Emotions.
Outcomes.

Spoiler: It never worked.
And it only made me feel worse.

When we tether our mental wellness to the actions of others, we’re setting ourselves up for disappointment, resentment, and chaos. True stability doesn’t come from control—it comes from acceptance.


Pause. Then Take Right Action.

Today, when I feel disturbed, I pause.

I ask myself:

  • What’s actually going on?

  • What do I need to do for me?

  • Is there any action to take?

  • Or is this something I need to let go?

That pause is everything.

Because if I haven’t checked in with myself—if I haven’t done the inner work first—any action I take outwardly might come from fear, ego, or unmet expectations.

Feelings aren’t facts.
And reactions aren’t always truth.

I’ve learned that when I find my center—when I root myself in clarity and self-love—I no longer need everyone else to behave a certain way for me to be OK.
I become OK because I’ve chosen to be.


You Are Not the Center of the Universe (And That’s a Good Thing)

Sometimes we resist change because it feels personal.
Unfair.
Uncomfortable.

But growth rarely happens in comfort.
And what doesn’t feel good in the moment might be the very shift that leads to a better outcome—not just for us, but for the collective.

That’s humbling.

We’re not the center of the universe—but we are a part of something bigger. And when we stop trying to bend life to our will, we open ourselves up to learning, connection, and peace.


Your Peace Is Your Responsibility

Here’s what I know:
No one else is responsible for your OK.

Not your partner.
Not your friends.
Not your boss.
Not your timeline.
Not your past.

You are.

When we find peace within ourselves, the chaos around us loses its power. We stop being reactive. We become responsive. We make room for grace. For learning. For love.

I didn’t know I could choose peace.

When I was living in the dark, peace wasn’t even a concept I believed in. My mind was in constant chaos—racing with thoughts, shame, regret, and fear. I felt like a prisoner in my own head. The noise never stopped. And because I believed I was broken, I thought I deserved the torment.

I wore the label of “victim” like it was a fact, not realizing that the most painful parts of my story were being written by the choices I was making every day. But here’s the truth I wish I’d known sooner:
Peace isn’t something that just shows up one day. Peace is something we choose.


Peace Starts with a Choice

When I finally admitted I needed help, it was like the door cracked open just enough to let in a sliver of light. That sliver? It was peace. Just a little. Just enough. But it was mine. And it showed me what was possible.

Today, I find peace in many ways—through nature, through connection, through honesty, through stillness. I don’t wait for peace to find me anymore. I go and get it. Every single day.


You Are Worth the Work

Peace is possible. But peace requires effort. It asks us to let go of the lies, face the truth, and show up for ourselves—even when it’s uncomfortable. That’s how we earn it. That’s how we grow into it. And that’s how we become it.

Peace is not perfection. Peace is knowing you’re doing your best. Peace is forgiving yourself.
Peace is choosing love over shame—and presence over panic.

You may not feel it right now. But I promise you, it’s within reach.

Giving Rather Than Getting

There was a time when everything I did came with a silent expectation.
If I showed up for you, I wanted something in return. If I helped, I hoped you’d notice. And if I gave anything of myself, I measured it against what I might receive.

The scales were always out—always tallying the effort and the reward. And when the reward didn’t match the effort? I’d spiral. I’d get resentful, frustrated, even self-righteous. I wore my “sacrifice” like a badge, convincing myself I was generous, when in reality, I was just trying to fill an empty space inside me.

But living that way left me exhausted, isolated, and hollow. It was all about me—and it never felt like enough.


Learning to Give Without Expectation

When I began my recovery journey, one of the first things I was told was this: to keep what you’ve been given, you have to give it away.

At first, that made no sense to me. I was barely hanging on. I felt like I had nothing to offer. How could I give when I was still trying to survive?

But I quickly learned that we always have something to give. Even when we’re at our lowest, our honesty, our story, our presence—they matter.

On the days when I felt broken or unsure, just saying “I’m not okay today” gave others permission to say the same. That alone created connection. And that connection helped both of us breathe a little easier.


Service Is a Two-Way Street

Giving isn’t just about grand gestures. It’s about showing up. Listening. Checking in. Offering time or kindness without needing anything back.

And here’s the thing: when we shift our focus from ourselves to someone else, something powerful happens. We get out of our heads. We stop obsessing over our problems, even for a moment. And sometimes, those moments are exactly what we need to find our footing again.

Helping others helps us, too. It reminds us of how far we’ve come. It brings us back to the present. And it shows us that we’re capable of making a difference—even on days when we feel like we’re falling apart.

But it only works when we give without strings attached.


Check Your Motives

There’s a big difference between offering help out of love and offering help because you expect something in return.

One is generous.
The other is transactional.

And when we expect something in return, it turns kindness into manipulation.

It’s not always easy to recognize. Sometimes, our ego disguises expectation as “helpfulness.” But if you’re giving with a secret hope that someone will praise you, repay you, or see you differently—it’s time to check your motives.

The truth is, the real reward of giving comes when we release the outcome. When we trust that showing up with a pure heart is enough.


Let the Act Be the Gift

When we give freely, with no attachment to the result, we open ourselves up to deeper joy, unexpected blessings, and real connection.

Sometimes the reward is knowing someone else feels less alone. Sometimes it’s gaining perspective on our own journey. And sometimes it’s simply the peace that comes from doing the next right thing.

The universe has a way of putting us exactly where we need to be—if we’re willing to stay present and let go of what we think we should get out of it.

Fighting Your Own Battle

Most of us have heard the phrase: Be kind, for everyone is fighting a battle you know nothing about. It’s a gentle reminder to extend grace to others. But here’s the truth that hits a little deeper: Sometimes we do know what battle someone is facing—and we’re still trying to fight our own.

It’s hard enough to stay present in our own struggle. Add in someone else’s chaos, triggers, or unresolved pain, and suddenly your progress feels shaky, your peace interrupted, your healing…unraveled.


I Had to Learn to Fight for Myself First

For years, I didn’t know how to fight my own battle. I carried old wounds, outdated beliefs, and habits that didn’t serve me—but they were familiar. They felt like truth.

Over time, I found my stride. I learned to live with my battle in a way that felt healthy, loving, and sustainable. But the journey wasn’t smooth. I assumed that because I was working so hard to grow, change, and heal…everyone else was too.

Spoiler alert: They weren’t.

That assumption pulled me down more than once. I had to stop seeing people for their potential and start meeting them exactly where they were. It wasn’t my job to rescue anyone or walk their path for them.

I had to protect my own peace—not because I was better, but because I was responsible for keeping myself well. And that meant accepting that not everyone is ready to do their work. Not everyone wants to. Not everyone knows how. And that’s not my battle to fight.


Other People’s Battles Are Not Yours to Lose

There will be people in your life who trigger things you thought you’d healed. It might not even make sense in the moment. But their words, tone, or behavior can hit a nerve connected to a wound from long ago.

Or maybe they remind you of yourself—an older version of you, or a part of you you’re still trying to change. And instead of compassion, you find yourself feeling judgmental or impatient.

When that happens, pause. Ask yourself:

Is this really about them—or is it about something unhealed in me?

We can’t control how others show up. But we can decide how much power we give them. If you’re agitated, it’s your responsibility to ask why.

That doesn’t mean blaming yourself. It means getting curious about your own reactions.

If someone’s behavior is affecting your peace and you can’t fix the issue—walk away. Let it go. Preserve your space. Protect your peace.


Focus on Your Fight

Your path is yours. So is your pace.

You’re allowed to heal slowly. You’re allowed to outgrow what you’ve outlived. You’re allowed to say, “I love you, but I’m focusing on me right now.”

And you’re also allowed to ask:

Why does this bother me? What is this trying to teach me?

You can’t fight someone else’s battle. They can’t fight yours. And trying to do so only distracts you from your own healing.

You’ve worked too hard to let someone else’s war pull you back into old patterns.

So stay the course. Fight clean. Protect your energy. Stay on your path.

You’re not just fighting—you’re winning. One healthy boundary at a time.
