If I’m being honest, most of the time…I don’t feel ready.

Whether it’s a new opportunity, a big decision, or even sitting down to write something like this—I rarely feel 100% ready. If left to my own devices, I’d keep fine-tuning, researching, adjusting, and second-guessing. I’d wait until everything was “perfect.”

But what I’ve learned on this path is simple and powerful: ready isn’t a feeling—it’s a decision.


The Myth of “Feeling Ready”

We tell ourselves we’ll start when we feel more confident.
We’ll speak up when we feel more prepared.
We’ll leap when we feel less scared.

But the truth is, that feeling of readiness? It doesn’t always show up. And if it does, it usually comes after we’ve already taken action—not before.

The illusion of “readiness” keeps us stuck. We wait, thinking there’s some magical moment where we’ll feel different—bolder, braver, more equipped. But most opportunities don’t wait for us to feel ready.

They ask us to decide to be ready.


The Power of Deciding

In my life, there have been countless times I’ve had to make that decision.

Sometimes it was because of a deadline.
Sometimes it was because an opportunity had an expiration date.
Sometimes I just knew if I didn’t move forward, I’d stay stuck.

And every time, I’ve learned this: I didn’t need to know everything. I just needed to know enough to start.

Being ready doesn’t mean having every answer. It doesn’t mean knowing the full path. It means saying, “I’ve got what I need to take this step, and I’ll figure the next one out as I go.”


Do What’s In Front of Your Hands

One thing I’ve carried with me on my journey is this simple reminder:
Do what’s in front of your hands.

That means staying grounded in the present step—even when your mind wants to jump five steps ahead. Yes, it’s wise to have a vision. I like to look a little ahead, to prepare for what’s coming. But the real growth? It happens in the now.

When you focus on what’s right in front of you—just the next task, the next decision, the next act of courage—you start to build momentum. And that momentum leads to clarity, confidence, and more opportunity.


Progress, Not Perfection

Waiting until you feel ready often comes from a deeper fear of making mistakes. But perfection isn’t the goal—progress is.

You’re allowed to make messy starts.
You’re allowed to learn as you go.
You’re allowed to pivot, evolve, and adjust your plan.

Because the truth is, the journey is the point. It’s not about getting it “right” the first time. It’s about moving forward, learning, and becoming.

You’re not behind. You’re not unqualified. You’re simply standing at the edge of the next thing. And all that’s left is to decide to begin.

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the things we don’t see. The pain people carry. The stories they don’t share. The struggles that never make it to the surface.

Because the truth is, no one knows what happens quietly.


Behind the Brave Face

When I was living in the dark, I wore a mask. Every day, I put on a brave face and told the world I was fine—even though I was anything but.

It became a reflex. A way to survive.

And I know I’m not alone in that.

We live in a world where “I’m fine” is often code for “I’m barely holding it together.” And it’s easy to miss the signs. It’s easy to take people at face value and forget that everyone is carrying something.

So now, when I interact with someone—whether it’s a friend, a stranger, or the person ringing up my groceries—I try to remember that I have no idea what they might be going through. I might be stepping into their quiet moment.


Hitting the Pause Button

I’m not perfect at this. There are days when someone’s energy or reaction triggers me, too. But I try to pause. To not react out of my own pain or assumptions.

Because the truth is, sometimes someone’s anger, withdrawal, or silence isn’t about me at all. It’s a symptom of something deeper. Something they haven’t said. Something they feel they can’t say.

That’s why compassion matters.

That’s why curiosity matters.

And that’s why I try to lead with both.


When We Stay Quiet, We Suffer Alone

One of the most heartbreaking things I’ve learned is this:

When people don’t feel safe enough to speak their truth, they often believe they have no way out.

Not just emotionally—but tragically, sometimes, physically.

When we silence our pain—out of fear, shame, or the belief that no one will understand—it festers. And in that silence, so many people feel hopeless, isolated, and unseen.

They start to believe the lie that their story is too much… that they are too much.

And when there’s no outlet, no connection, no safe space to speak from the darkness,
some believe the only way to end their pain is to end everything.

That’s why sharing your story matters.

Because when you let someone see your truth, you give them permission to share theirs.
You remind them that connection is still possible.
That healing isn’t something they have to do alone.

Your vulnerability can be someone else’s lifeline.

And their story might just help you, too.

You Can’t Help Someone Who Doesn’t Want To Help Themselves

We’ve all been there—someone we care about comes to us, overwhelmed by their circumstances. We listen. We offer suggestions. But what they really want is a quick fix, and often, one that lets them off the hook from actually doing the work. Sometimes people just need a break, and it’s kind to help where we can. But more often, the most loving thing we can do is encourage them to help themselves.


My Turning Point

Before I began my recovery journey, I constantly looked to others to rescue me from my own messes. I played the victim, and life felt so unmanageable that it was easier to expect someone else to clean it up.

The truth? My thinking was broken. My perception was skewed. I had no healthy tools or coping mechanisms. So when I finally reached out for real help, I was asked one question that changed everything:

“What are you willing to do?”

And for the first time, I said: Anything.

That was the moment things shifted. I had to fall far enough down into despair before I became willing to fight for my life. And fight I did.

Recovery taught me that this new way of living would only work if I worked it. No one could do it for me. I had to believe I was worth the effort—and that belief became the spark that lit my path forward.

With each milestone I earned, my self-esteem and self-worth grew. I began to think about the younger version of myself—the one I’d neglected, the one I’d hurt. I made a commitment to her that I would never abandon her again. That’s who I fight for now. That’s who I protect.


Why Doing the Work Matters

You can’t do the work for someone else. And if you try, you’re actually robbing them of something vital: the opportunity to grow.

Growth comes from struggle. Strength is built through effort. Confidence is earned through consistency. When we do someone else’s heavy lifting, we deny them the chance to build the muscle they’ll need to stand on their own.

Of course, we can offer support. We can stand beside someone and remind them they’re not alone. But we must let them take the lead. Not only is it healthier for them—it’s healthier for us, too.

Practicing this kind of boundary is a form of self-respect. It’s a reminder that we’re not responsible for fixing everyone’s life. That people-pleasing, over-functioning, and rescuing don’t lead to healing—they often lead to resentment.

You can love someone deeply and still let them do their own work. In fact, that might be the greatest form of love there is.

We Accept The Love We Think We Deserve

For most of my life, I believed I was unlovable.

Not just hard to love—unworthy of it.

I didn’t like myself, let alone love myself, so when someone claimed to love me, I didn’t trust it. If someone’s love felt genuine, it made me uncomfortable. I feared they’d eventually discover the “ugly truth,” so I kept one foot out the door—just in case. Even after I began to learn how to love myself, I still accepted love that was far below what I knew I deserved.

Because deep down, I didn’t believe I could ever have the kind of love I truly wanted.

That belief kept me stuck in relationships that weren’t healthy. They weren’t safe. And they weren’t loving. But it was only through experiencing pure loveone grounded in mutual respect, connection, and emotional honesty—that I finally learned what I truly deserved.

And more importantly, I believed I could have it.


Love Begins Within

It’s hard to receive real love when you don’t feel it for yourself.

Sure, there are times we begin to heal through the way someone else sees us. But more often than not, if we don’t believe we’re worthy, we’ll sabotage anything good that comes our way.

To let love in, love has to live inside us first.

If fear, shame, or self-hatred are taking up residence, there’s no room for love to grow. Love doesn’t thrive where it’s unwelcome. But when we begin to care for ourselves, nurture our hearts, and see our worth, love becomes a natural extension of that inner work.

It becomes the lens we filter everything through.

If what we say, do, or allow in our lives doesn’t align with love—it has to go.


What We Accept Reflects What We Believe

When we truly love ourselves, we become more compassionate toward others. Our energy shifts from scarcity to abundance. From needing love to sharing it.

And the more love we put out, the more love finds us.

That kind of love? It’s not desperate or dependent. It’s full. It’s expansive. It shows up with open hands, not clenched fists. And when it arrives, we can receive it—not because we’re perfect, but because we’ve finally stopped questioning whether we deserve it.

I was talking with someone recently about truth—
that raw, honest place inside where there are no walls, no masks, no pretending.
That space where we allow ourselves to be vulnerable enough to let our truth speak to someone else’s truth.

Before I Could Speak From the Heart

Before walking this path, I didn’t speak that language. I couldn’t.
I was too afraid to let anyone see the real me.

I believed vulnerability was weakness.

So I kept my heart closed. I played roles. I wore masks.
I hid behind a version of myself I thought the world would accept.

But all that hiding left me feeling even more isolated. Even more alone.
And the more I suppressed my truth, the more painful it became to carry it.

It took a long time to let that fear go.

Surrender Is Where It Began

I had to surrender.
Admit that my way wasn’t working.
That my silence, my pretending, my performance—it was keeping me stuck. Sick.

That surrender became a turning point.
The moment I let go of control was the moment I took my power back.

From there, I was told something that has stayed with me:
You have to be rigorously honest if you want to get better.

The more I spoke from the heart, the more comfortable I became living in that truth.
And the more honest I was, the deeper my connections became.

But I won’t lie—it wasn’t always easy.

Now, I know better.

Are You Disappointed With The Results Of The Work You Didn’t Do?

It’s easy to feel disappointed when things don’t work out the way we’d hoped. But here’s the hard truth: sometimes we’re disappointed not because life let us down, but because we didn’t show up and do the work. We wanted the results, but skipped the steps it takes to earn them.

I know this because I lived it. For years, I clung to magical thinking—believing that somehow, some way, the good things I wanted would just appear. I thought if I wished hard enough or hoped long enough, the change I needed would show up without me having to actually do anything different.

Spoiler alert: it didn’t.

Wishing Isn’t Working

Looking back, I realize how much time I wasted waiting for something to happen instead of making something happen. I was stuck in the cycle of perfectionism and low self-worth—telling myself there was no point in trying if I couldn’t do it perfectly, or that I wasn’t worthy of the outcome anyway. So I stayed stuck, watching others get the results I wanted while doing nothing to change my own situation.

Scrolling through social media didn’t help. I saw people thriving, hitting milestones, sharing wins. And I wanted that. But instead of getting inspired, I got resentful. Why not me?

The truth: I hadn’t done the work. They had.

The Shift Begins with a Step

It took hitting a true bottom—emotionally, spiritually, and physically—for me to finally reach out and ask for help. I didn’t know what the path looked like, and I didn’t need to. I just had to take the first step. That single act—picking up the phone and admitting I needed support—set everything into motion.

As I walked this new path, I started to do the work. And the results came. Slowly at first, but with each effort, my life began to change. The more I invested in myself, the more I believed I was worthy of what I was building. And that belief—that self-worth—became the true result of the work I was doing.

Results Take Action

No one can do this for you. Not your friends, not your partner, not your mentor. The transformation starts with you. It might feel overwhelming to imagine all the work it takes to change your life, but you don’t have to do it all at once. You only have to do what’s in front of you. One step, one moment, one decision at a time.

Doing the work shifts your mindset. It silences the doubts and empowers you to keep going. Even when the results aren’t immediate or perfect, the effort is building something better. Something sustainable. Something real.

I lived in a cycle of self-sabotage, denial, and fear, making poor choices—or worse, making no choices at all—and then wondering why things didn’t change.

The Warning Signs Were Me

When I was living in the dark, I didn’t believe I had options. I told myself I was strong, that I didn’t need help. But the truth was, I was drowning. And still, I looked down on those I thought were weak—never realizing that true strength isn’t in pretending you’re fine. It’s in admitting you’re not.

It wasn’t until someone else showed me what it looked like to live differently—to step into the light—that I began to believe it was possible. They didn’t lecture me. They simply lived in a way that made me want what they had. They were a shining example, and I wanted to become one too.

Turning Toward the Light

The moment I chose change, a tiny flicker of light appeared. It wasn’t much, but it was enough. I picked up the phone. I asked for help. I started doing the work. And slowly—so slowly at first—that flicker began to grow.

I surrounded myself with people who inspired me. People who had walked through the darkness and come out shining. They didn’t have perfect lives, but they had something real—something I wanted. And being around their light helped me ignite my own.

The more I leaned into that light, the more I began to change. My relationships shifted. My inner dialogue softened. People who used to worry about me now cheered me on. And I began to realize that maybe, just maybe, I could be that beacon for someone else.

Light Is Contagious

We get to decide who we want to be. Every day. With every choice. You don’t have to stay stuck. You’re not bound to your past. If you’ve been a dire warning, you can become a shining example. All it takes is a spark—a moment of hope, a tiny act of courage, a willingness to believe that you’re worthy of the light.

Was Blind But Now I See

I was listening to Andrea Bocelli’s moving performance of “Amazing Grace” recently at the Duomo cathedral in Milan. As I heard the words “I was blind but now I see,” it struck me deeply. I hadn’t really thought about that line before—just the song as a whole and what it meant—but it reminded me of the years I spent struggling.

There was a time when I didn’t believe I was worth saving, a time when I had lost hope. Back then, I was blind. I was blind to myself, my life, my behavior—thinking I was someone I wasn’t, living a life I wasn’t. I saw only what my mind told me to see, not the truth of what was really going on.

I was living in the darkness of my mind, while the real me—the person I truly was—slowly slipped away under the layers of garbage I kept piling on.


Seeing the Truth for What It Is

We tend to see what we want to see, don’t we? Whether it’s good or bad, we often paint ourselves a picture we choose to believe. Some of us hide behind a picture-perfect fantasy; others choose to cloak everything in doom and gloom.

But the truth is, life usually falls somewhere in the middle—often not as extreme as our minds want us to believe.

I used to use distractions and numbing behaviors to avoid the truth. Even during this time of isolation and home seclusion, those distractions are still available. Facing the truth is uncomfortable. It’s so much easier to stay behind the veil of the story we tell ourselves.

For me, the truth was standing right in front of me, and I could no longer hide. It took realizing that continuing to hide from my truth would ultimately destroy me. When I finally sought help, that veil was lifted. And while seeing the truth was painful at first, it was also freeing.


Freedom in Truth

The truth was my chance to make changes. To see the mess my life had become. To recognize the lies my head had been feeding me.

At first, it was easier to hide and live in a world of my own choosing, but things were never going to get better in that place. I was lucky to have seen the truth when I did, and that I was still able to do something about it. Not everyone gets that chance.

When we are willing to face the truth, we give ourselves the opportunity to change what we don’t like. Or at least, to improve things. Truth gives us clarity to make better choices and to see how those choices affect not just us, but those around us.

It’s within truth that real change is possible. It’s where we find the opportunity to become someone we are proud of—someone who lives a life we want, not one we’re pretending to live.

So take off the glasses that may be clouding your vision. Look at your life for what it truly is, and use that vision to build a life you are proud to see.

It’s OK To Feel Out Loud

I used to believe that showing my feelings meant weakness.
For most of my adult life, I stuffed down every emotion I thought was “bad,” “embarrassing,” or would put a negative light on me.

When those feelings bubbled up, I’d shame myself. I told myself I was stronger for not showing them. And I looked down on others who wore their emotions on their sleeves.

I thought I was in control.
But the truth was, I was being controlled—by fear, by self-judgment, by the belief that emotions were dangerous.

And it worked… until it didn’t.


The Truth About Suppressed Emotions

Eventually, I couldn’t hold it all in anymore.
Those feelings I refused to acknowledge started eating me up inside. They fueled the negative self-talk that looped in my mind, telling me I was “less than,” “unworthy,” and “weak.”

I had to learn—slowly, painfully—that feeling my feelings wasn’t dangerous.
Trying to keep them hidden was.

When I finally reached out for help, I stripped away the distractions and coping mechanisms that kept me from facing how I truly felt.

It was terrifying. I felt exposed, raw, and fragile.
At first, I thought I couldn’t handle it. The emotions overwhelmed me, and my anxiety spiked. But I was encouraged to breathe through them, to sit with them, and to talk with others who understood.

Even then, I tried to keep up appearances.
I remember sitting in a support group, listening to another woman share her truth, and recognizing my own story in hers. My eyes filled with tears, but I fought to keep them hidden.
