H.O.W. – Honesty, Open-Mindedness, Willingness

Before walking this path I constantly asked myself how. I asked myself how I had gotten myself into the place I had. I asked myself how I had let things get so bad. I asked myself how I had lost control of my life. And, I asked myself how I could stop the pain. But it never occurred to me that the answer to all those questions was in the question itself. H.O.W. is exactly how you do and get those things, by honesty, open-mindedness and willingness. It was right there in front of me the whole time. I had to fall much farther down the ladder of despair before I would realize this, and was even willing, open enough and honest enough to implement these tools to find a better way of life. But there they were, waiting for me to finally see them each time I asked how.

When I was living the dark, I wasn’t practicing any of those things. I was as stubborn as they come, I was lying to myself about what my part was in my own suffering and I wasn’t willing to change. It took a lot of pain to finally land on my knees and ask for help, pain that I was in control of for the most part, and pain that I was allowing to destroy my life and my spirit. When I made the commitment to myself to get better and to find a better way of life, I was told I had to get honest, rigorously honest, that I had to have an open mind about new ideas, new ways of doing things, and I had to be willing to do whatever needed to be done to save my life. I was told that willingness was the key, and it was, I wasn’t always ready to jump in and do what needed to be done right away, at times it felt daunting, but I was told that all I had to be was willing, that was enough to start, and it was. When I found willingness I typically would find the courage to take action, and to make those changes I needed to make to have the life I have today. And sometimes I still have to remind myself of H.O.W. and how important honesty, open-mindedness and willingness is to my daily recovery, because it’s an ongoing process, I need to continue to practice those things to make sure I’m in a healthy and loving place, and, I’m in the place I am meant to be.

No matter where we find ourselves in our lives it’s important to ask yourself if you are living with H.O.W. It is important to always check in with yourself and see if you may have gotten stuck somewhere that feels comfortable, or somewhere you think you deserve to be, rather than where you should be, that’s where the honesty comes in, and when you’re able to find the honesty about where you are, it’s import to be open-minded about the solution, and how to get to, or back, to where you are meant to be, and then all you need is some willingness, the rest, usually takes care of itself, because once you know there is a solution, are open to new ideas, and are willing to take action, it usually doesn’t take too long for that action to start, it’s hard to sit in a place you know you’re not supposed to be when you know there is a way out and you know how to get out.

You hold the key to your own future, and it starts with some H.O.W. SLAY on!

SLAY OF THE DAY: Do you find that you keep asking yourself how you’ve gotten to where you are in your life, how the same things keep happening to you and how you can change those things? Do you find that you keep making the same mistakes or choices over and over and end up with the same results? Are you able to look at your life, and choices, honestly, and see where you can make some changes or different choices? Are you open to new ideas? If not, how has being stuck in your ways helped you? How has it harmed you? How do you think your life may be different if you were open to ideas? Where can you apply this new thinking? Are you willing to make the necessary changes that you may need to make in order to have a better life? If not, why not? If yes, what action can you take today to make some positive changes? It takes three simple things to get started on a new life.
